The announcement
At Gemini at Work on October 9, 2026, Google Cloud presented a Gemini agent intended to connect knowledge work, content creation, coding, and business applications. Its announcement also described Workspace integration, data analysis capabilities, and controls for governing access and spending. Individual features and access should be checked against the current product documentation.
The significant shift is from asking a model for an answer to asking a connected system to complete work. That introduces questions about which documents it may read, which tools it may use, and what it should do when an action needs approval.
Our perspective
For developers building an agent, the integration layer deserves as much attention as the model. Start with a bounded task and make its success observable. A support-triage assistant, for example, can first suggest a category and draft a reply before being allowed to send anything.
Useful operational features include clear activity records, explicit permissions, limits on repeated tool calls, and a way to recover from a partially completed workflow. These are engineering recommendations, not claims that any single vendor has solved every failure mode.
The most persuasive agent demonstration is not a long chain of actions. It is a useful result that can be checked, explained, and repeated safely.
