The update
On October 20, 2026, AMD announced broader support for FSR Upscaling 4.1. The announcement includes Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards, Ryzen AI Max systems, Ryzen AI 9 laptops, and selected handheld processors. AMD described Xbox Series X|S support as coming soon, so that part should not be confused with an already-completed rollout.
FSR upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from lower-resolution rendered frames. AMD says the updated machine-learning approach improves image quality compared with its earlier FSR 3.1 solution. Actual results depend on the device, driver, game, and settings.
Our perspective
The broader lesson is that a graphics platform continues to evolve after the hardware purchase. Software compatibility can change what an existing machine can do, which makes driver and game support worth checking before deciding that an upgrade is necessary.
When comparing modes, look at moving scenes as well as screenshots. Fine detail, unstable edges, interface elements, and responsiveness can reveal trade-offs that a headline frame-rate figure misses. Upscaling and frame generation also describe different techniques, so results should identify which features were enabled.
We have not independently measured this update. Treat advertised improvements as a starting point for testing your own games.
