What Google announced
On October 28, 2026, Google introduced Gemini 4 Carbon, positioning it around coding, cybersecurity, and tasks requiring sustained reasoning. Google reported improvements on several evaluations, while describing an initial rollout to selected cyber defenders and trusted partners. The announcement should not be read as unrestricted availability for every developer.
Performance claims in a launch post are vendor-reported results. They can help identify what to test, but they do not prove that a model will produce equally strong results on an unfamiliar codebase or a particular business workflow.
Our perspective
A useful evaluation should start with a small collection of real tasks: a bug that has a known fix, a feature with explicit acceptance criteria, and a refactor that must preserve behavior. Compare correctness, review effort, latency, and the full cost of finishing the job.
For longer-running work, give the system clear checkpoints and require evidence before it declares success. A model that can propose a security improvement still needs code review, tests, and a controlled deployment process.
Carbon is a development worth following, but its eventual value to a team depends on access, reliability, and performance on that team's own work. We have not independently benchmarked the model.
